Ramps help to make the Folk Hall accessible for wheelchairs and buggies

We’re committed to making the Folk Hall accessible for everyone and we’re constantly reviewing how we can improve things.

Accessibility was a major focus of our extensive refurbishment, which was completed in 2018.

Parking

We have a free public car park as well as four designated Blue Badge Holder Bays just outside the main entrance.

Accessible entrances

Whether you come by car, bus or from the local area, every entrance into the main body of the building is via either level access or a wide ramp. The Explore Library and our Eatery can be accessed directly too, and we have had a ramp installed for the Discovery room so more people can access this community space.

Finding your way around the Folk Hall

Our signage is designed to make it easier for people to find their way around the Folk Hall independently. We have colour coding to guide people to key services and rooms, and symbols to support people with difficulty reading written language.

Changing Places

Our Changing Places facility is situated near reception on the ground floor. It’s available to anyone who needs it, any time we are open, not just people coming in for our other services or activities. The room has an adjustable changing table, tracking hoist, toilet with support bars, movable screen, mirror, hooks for clothing and shelves for other personal items.

Platform lift

Our platform lift gives full access to the first floor mezzanine and public spaces, as well as Bramley meeting room, which is a couple of steps higher up.

Hearing loops

We have hearing induction loops available in all of our meeting spaces. Some of these are fixed, but where this isn’t possible we have portable hearing loops available in the spaces at all times.

We are always looking for ways to improve what we offer to our community and customers and welcome your suggestions and ideas to ensure your experience is the best it can be.

Accessible café menus

Our menus are designed to be easier to read. The simpler style and clear spacing between items makes it more user-friendly for people with a variety of needs.

Our chairs

For all standard bookings, events and classes we use our standard grey chairs, but if you need specific seating or have any other access needs, let us know by speaking to the Folk Hall reception team or the booking organiser. The grey chairs do not have arms and can support a weight of up to 200kgs.

Elsewhere in the building, we have a variety of seating within the eatery space, some seats with arm rests and some without. We also have banquette seating in both the main reception area and in the eatery.
