Beyond the walls of the Folk Hall in New Earswick and the surrounding area we have a number of groups, local businesses and community interest points for you to check out.

Social Groups and Activities


NELLI is a local community group, open to all, aimed at reducing loneliness in New Earswick NELLI meet in the eatery at the Folk Hall Wednesdays from 10am-12pm. Come and join us, enjoy drinks and cake with our welcoming group, and make new friends. Come on your own or bring a friend.

New Earswick Camera Club

New Earswick Camera Club was founded in 1949 by a group of photographers in New Earswick ‘to develop and sustain an interest in the art and science of photography within the New Earswick community and neighbouring areas’ . The Club meets weekly between September and April on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Friends Meeting House in New Earswick.

New Earswick Flower Club

New Earswick Flower Club welcomes anyone who is interested in flowers and flower arranging. Their club encourages the art of floral decoration, by means of demonstrations, practice classes and workshops. Come along to exchange ideas to enhance the enjoyment of flower arranging. Everyone welcome, whether you are a beginner or have more experience of flower arranging.

New Earswick Local History Society

Are you interested in the history of New Earswick? Why not join the Local History Society and learn more about our unique village? We meet in the Folk Hall or the Friends’ Meeting House to enjoy illustrated talks about the area.

Foss Photography Club

Foss Photography Club, York, set up by a couple of enthusiasts who wish to enjoy, in a friendly social atmosphere, all aspects of photography, sharing knowledge and encouraging new photographers. Whether you are an enthusiastic beginner, an experienced amateur or a professional, and whether you use a camera or a mobile, all are welcome.

Community Events

Film at the Folk Hall

We are your friendly local volunteer run cinema. With a huge, 16 foot, high definition projection in the glorious Orchard Hall, our friendly relaxed environment includes table seating, and a licensed bar. We even have an interval so you can make your cinema trip a social one!

Sleeper Market

Monthly community driven market, with local stalls and a range of fantastic good. 1st Sunday of each month.

Community Interest Groups

New Earswick Friends Quaker Meeting House

New Earswick Quaker Meeting Sundays at 10:30am at the Friends Meeting House. All people of any faith or none are welcome.

New Earswick Parish Council

Meetings are held at the Folk Hall on the third Monday of each month (except December) commencing at 7pm. All residents are welcome to attend.

New Earswick Residents Forum (NERF)

NERF is free, and open to all New Earswick residents over 18yrs. We are a group of residents who regularly meet with staff from Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust to discuss all aspects of living in New Earswick. NERF look at ways to support community improvements and encourage local community groups to apply for funding.


Community Action for Nature

Everyone is welcome to pop along and say hello. They are a group of volunteers of varying ages and abilities with a passion for nature & wildlife. They are a self funded group, and they collect and recycle aluminium drinks cans & sell logs. If you enjoy working with a friendly group of people, learning about the area we live in and enjoy the outside spaces, then come along and join them. New volunteers are always welcome.

New Earswick Community Garden (NEST)

The Community Garden welcomes all visitors and potential volunteers. We are a small, friendly team of volunteers who love being in the open air, having a chat and looking after this lovely space.

New Earswick Nature Reserve

For those who are unaware of the Nature Reserve it is the wooded area opposite the Link Road and Haxby Road junction. It is accessed from the gate on the old railway track about 100 metres from Haxby Road. New Earswick Nature Reserve is a locked and enclosed area however anybody can apply for an access key. There are also a series of open days throughout the year.

Sports and Leisure

New Earswick Cricket Club

They are a friendly, sociable and inclusive cricket club. They have two adult teams and, new for 2022, a women’s softball team. They run the ECB All Stars and Dynamos programmes for juniors and have U9, U11 and U13 junior teams.

New Earswick Park Run

A free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event. Walk, Jog, run, volunteer or spectate – it’s up to you!

New Earswick Swimming Pool

Open to all, the volunteer run swimming pool offers a variety of classes and swim sessions.

New Earswick Sports and Social Club

Now under new management, New Earswick Sports and Social Club offers a full range of team sports for all ages with Rugby and Football pitches, Tennis courts and Cricket grounds. The Sports Club has a fully licensed bar with Sky sports, a pool table and darts board. Come along and join them for FREE pool on Monday and Tuesday (over 16’s).

New Earswick Tennis Club

Whether you are returning to the game, been playing since school or are just beginning, then they are the club for you. They have 3 floodlit courts so play takes place all year round.

Strensall Tigers Football Club

Strensall Tigers FC are a men’s amateur football club playing in the York Minster Engineering Football League.

The club is based at New Earswick Sports Club, where we play our home games and enjoy a drink or two afterwards. The club has two teams which compete in York’s top leagues: the first team, which plays in the Premier Division, and the reserve team, which plays in Reserve A.

Rowntree RUFC

Are you a beginner, new to the sport and want to try it out or you might be experienced and you want to develop your skills? Maybe you want to get a bit fitter and try something new in a welcoming, friendly and safe environment? The Rowntree RUFC is the perfect solution, hosting their weekly training sessions Tuesdays, starting at 7pm from July at New Earswick Sports Club.

York Health Walks

Getting active can be difficult, but we are here to help. With Ramblers Wellbeing Walks, you can take part in a free short walk nearby to help you get active and stay active. Our walks are a great way to stretch your legs and explore what’s on your doorstep while getting to meet others and chat.


Joseph Rowntree School

The facilities available at the school enable them to provide cutting edge, 21st Century technology and equipment for all their students and the wider community. Keep an eye out for information about events and performances that are open to the community on their website and social media.

New Earswick Library

New Earswick Library can be found at the Folk Hall near the Eatery. You can pop in to borrow, browse and return books or use a PC, any time that the Folk Hall is open (Monday to Friday 9am-6pm, saturday 9am -1:30pm).

George’s Greens are not able to be at the Folk Hall on a Saturday currently. You are welcome to place an order for delivery by calling the shop on 01904 767900. Minimum spend £3 and free delivery to New Earswick addresses. Please place all orders by the Friday before Saturday delivery.

New Earswick Community Wood Yard

New Earswick Community Wood Yard is a community group run by volunteers that stops wooden pallets and other types of timber from being skipped and reclaims the wood to sell on to the general public. We also make items that customers request including planters, garden furniture, recycle bin stores, shelves and many other items.
